Diesel Engine's Rules for Surviving in Water

When city streets turn into muddy rivers and gasoline-powered vehicles stall and float, diesel vehicles plow through the waves like steel behemoths. This is no miracle—it is the inherent waterproofing capabilities of the diesel engine at work. Its design, which does not rely on spark plugs for ignition, allows it to function normally even in torrential rain and flooding.

1. The inherent waterproofing advantages of the diesel engine

(1) No electrical ignition system

Eliminating high-voltage coils and spark plugs completely eliminates the risk of electrical short circuits caused by water, addressing the root cause of water-related fatal failures.

(2) High-temperature compression ignition mode

With compression end temperatures exceeding 500°C, the engine can reliably ignite even when the fuel-air mixture contains water, ensuring continuous operation.

(3) Reinforced sealing design

Critical components such as the crankcase and oil pan feature triple-seal structures, effectively preventing water ingress.

2. Essential Guide to Driving Through Water for Vehicle Owners

(1) Preparations

Before the rainy season, raise the air intake to at least 80 cm above the ground.

Replace the differential breather valve with a waterproof type.

Equip the vehicle with an emergency drainage hose and water-absorbing mat.

(2) Guidelines for Driving Through Water

① Observe the water depth; it should not exceed two-thirds of the tire height.

② Maintain a constant speed of 10 km/h while crossing; shifting gears is strictly prohibited.

③ After exiting the water, apply the brakes five times consecutively to remove water.

④ Immediately check the air filter’s moisture level and idle the engine to dry it.

(3) Post-Flood Inspection Focus

① Remove the air filter to check moisture levels.

② Inspect the engine oil color (milky white indicates emulsification; replacement is required).

③ Inspect the waterproof seals on all electrical connectors.

As extreme weather becomes the new normal, diesel engines are rewriting the rules of survival with their inherent waterproofing capabilities.
