The Secret to Driving 300 Kilometers Further on Family Trips with a Diesel Suv

During holidays, many families choose to take a road trip with their beloved car. However, fuel consumption is often a headache, especially when facing long distances and complex road conditions. This is where the advantages of a diesel SUV come into play, allowing you to drive 300 kilometers further on your family trip with ease.

Compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, diesel-powered vehicles offer significant advantages in terms of fuel efficiency. In the same model series, diesel engines typically achieve 30%–40% lower fuel consumption than gasoline engines. This means that, with the same fuel tank capacity, a diesel SUV can travel a longer distance. For example, a gasoline SUV with a 70-liter fuel tank and a combined fuel consumption of 12 liters per 100 kilometers can travel approximately 580 kilometers when fully fueled. In contrast, a diesel SUV of the same model, assuming a fuel consumption of 8 liters per 100 kilometers, can travel 870 kilometers when fully fueled, easily covering nearly 300 kilometers more.

The low-speed, high-torque characteristics of diesel engines are a key factor in improving range. When climbing hills on mountain roads, vehicles require strong torque to overcome gravity. Diesel engines can deliver significant torque at lower RPMs. For example, the 2.0T diesel engine in a certain diesel SUV can produce a maximum torque of 320 N・m between 1,600 and 2,600 RPM. When climbing hills, there is no need to rev the engine to high speeds to easily handle steep slopes, thereby avoiding the high fuel consumption associated with high RPMs. In contrast, gasoline engines typically require higher RPMs to produce significant power and torque, leading to significantly increased fuel consumption in mountainous terrain with frequent hill climbs.

From an engine specifications perspective, diesel engines generally have a higher compression ratio than gasoline engines. This allows diesel fuel to burn more completely, resulting in higher fuel conversion rates and improved thermal efficiency. Currently, the thermal efficiency of gasoline engines typically ranges between 30% and 40%, while diesel engines can achieve 35% to 45%. Higher thermal efficiency means that the same amount of fuel can be converted into more mechanical energy, thereby reducing fuel consumption.

Additionally, diesel engines use compression ignition, which does not require spark plugs to ignite the fuel-air mixture, simplifying the ignition system and reducing energy loss. Some diesel engines are also equipped with advanced turbocharging technology, such as variable nozzle turbochargers (VNT), which increase air intake at low RPMs to boost torque output while optimizing fuel efficiency.

In family road trip scenarios, whether it's a long-distance journey or mountain exploration, diesel SUVs offer low-speed high-torque characteristics, higher fuel efficiency, and advanced technical specifications, allowing you to travel an additional 300 kilometers without frequent stops at gas stations. This provides your family with a more relaxed and enjoyable travel experience, enabling you to fully savor the scenic views along the way.
